biography of Jos de Decker

Sculptor Jos de Decker was educated at the academies in Dendermonde and Brussels, after which he made a trip to Italy in 1937 to study Renaissance sculpture. After the Second World War he became a teacher at the academy in Dendermonde, where he eventually became director. The Deckers main themes are the woman, the child and the horse. Initially he worked very figuratively, but in the 1980s he stylized and abstracted his images more. In the 1990s, his work then became more figurative again. He also made sculptures for public spaces, including fountains, church statues and in 1938 a bust of the Belgian Queen Astrid (Brussels).
