biography of Jules Alexis Muenier

The French artist Muenier mainly painted genre scenes and landscapes, but he also regularly devoted himself to portraits and still life. His style can be described as moderately impressionistic, with his subjects often appearing somewhat romanticized and melancholy. From 1887 he regularly exhibited his work at the annual Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. The fact that his work was appreciated by contemporaries is apparent from the various awards he received. In 1895 he was honoured with the Légion d'honneur and in 1900 he received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle. Muenier sometimes used bright colours for his paintings, which he applied with a lively brushstroke, especially in oriental scenes.
