Queen Wilhelmina has practiced painting and drawing with passion all her life. Her work is hardly known, however, because it was no longer exhibited after 1951 and because, with a few exceptions, the Queen did not sell or give away any work. She received her first painting lessons from Frits Jansen at the age of ten. Later on, Albert Roelofs (1919-1920), Willem van Konijnenburg (1920), Arnold Marc Gorter (1920-1922) and Louis van Soest (1922) were her teachers. Under the guidance of the latter two painters, she mastered the oil painting technique. The Queen's oeuvre consists largely of landscapes, drawn or painted in an impressionistic style with a fine sense of mood and atmosphere. This was based on a deep religious experience. In the 1930s her painting reached a professional level. In 1932 and 1933 she consented to two traveling exhibitions of her work and in 1932 she was appointed working member of Pulchri Studio in The Hague, which she regarded as a crown on her work.
