Kreel Daamen worked for several years in the studio of the modernist genre painter Cor de Wolff, from whom he learned the art of painting. Although he slightly distorted his subjects, he never lost sight of reality. Daamen painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes, biblical and folk scenes in a smooth, expressionistic style with striking, powerful colours. In addition to paintings, he also made graphic work. He lived and worked all his life in Amsterdam, where he was a respected member of the 'De Onafhankelijken' (The Independents), an artists' association that strived for freedom in work and exhibition.
