biography of Léon Jouhaud

The painter and enamelist Lëon Jouhaud was born the son of a shopkeeper in Limoges. He studies medicine in Limoges and Paris, where he visits the Salons and museums and discovers the Impressionists. In 1903 he opens his practice in Limoges. Three years later, he takes an unusual step: he decides to devote himself entirely to art. He becomes a painter and also an enameller, an old local tradition. His teacher becomes the impressionist Charles Bichet, who will later become his father-in-law. Jouhaud's work is characterized by a stylized Art Deco style, bright colors and clear contours. The influence of Neo-Impressionism can sometimes be seen in his pastels and watercolors. From 1912, the painter successfully exhibits both in France and abroad.
