biography of Ludovicus Theodorus Johannes 'Louis' Meys

The oeuvre of the Hague painter and autodidact Louis Meys mainly consists of landscapes, interiors, flower still lifes and portraits. Initially, he painted strongly under the influence of the Hague School, both in terms of colours the subjects. However, after a visit to St. Paul de Vence in southern France in 1937, his painting style changed. This became more joyful and the painter chose a brighter, sunnier palette. In his watercolours he managed to shape the light in delicate shades that flow into each other. After 1937 many short and longer visits to the south of France followed. Throughout his life, Meys consciously opted for a traditional, impressionist style. Quality, craftsmanship and perfection were more important to him than 'fashion' and experiment.
