Louis Sabattier is one of the painters who were very well known in Paris around 1900, the period referred to as the Belle Epoque. Favorite subjects were the fashionable Parisian life on the boulevards and in the theaters, with elegant young women in the lead. Sabattier was trained by the famous genre painter Jean-Léon Gérome. Then he went his own way. In addition to being a painter of smoothly conceived genre scenes, he was a very popular portrait painter.
