biography of Louis Valtat

Louis Valtat was one of the most important French post-impressionists and fauvists. Valtat received his training in Paris and was friends with, among others, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Aristide Maillol, Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac. At the end of the 19th century he had contact with Les Nabis; in 1896 he shows works painted in the Paris Salon with pure colors and a rough pencil stroke that then already announce the fauvism. Valtat made many foreign trips and was in the period 1899-1913 regularly for a longer period in the South French Anthéor. In 1900, the well-known Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard received the exclusive right to trade Valtat's paintings and ensured that his work could be seen at all major avant-garde exhibitions at home and abroad. Valtat painted (flower) still lifes, nudes, portraits, landscapes and genre paintings.
