The Belgian Luc de Rycke was a free painter and also worked as a stage decorator at both theaters in his birthplace Ghent. In his free work, De Rycke had a preference for landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, which he painted in an impressionism leaning towards pointillism. This figure piece is literally and figuratively more solid in nature: wrestling women who have been put on the canvas as massive shapes with a broad brush. Various motifs can be seen all around, which together give a somewhat alienating effect. Rycke's experience as a stage decorator may play a part in this: adding attributes in the background for an extra narrative element.
