Flower still lifes and richly laid tables with fruits, game and seafood were the specialty of the Antwerp painter Lucas Schaefels. He was by far the most important still-life painter of his generation. Professionally, he was a 'jewelry drawing teacher' at the Antwerp Academy. In addition, he made paintings, monumental wall paintings and acted as the unofficial 'party decorator' of the city because he was in charge of street decorations on special occasions. The painter's work, among other things, hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
