biography of Ludwig Munthe

The landscape painter Ludwig Munthe, father of G.A.L. 'Morgenstjerne' Munthe, came to Düsseldorf from the Norwegian city of Bergen in 1861 to live there for the rest of his life. Here he took classes at the academy, which later, in 1893, appointed him professor. Munthe made many European study trips, including through his native country, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. He regularly stayed on the Dutch coast. In Katwijk, around 1900 a true artists' colony, he was one of the regular guests early on. Munthe painted beach scenes here in an impressionistic way. In addition, there are moody autumn and winter landscapes by his hand, characterized by a harmonious, tonal coloration.
