biography of Marc Chagall

The Russian-Jewish artist Marc Chagall is one of the most important visual artists of the 20th century. His use of colour is fabulous, his imagination limitless and his subjects are motivated by his own experiences and religious background. He was born in Vitebsk and after two years of academy in St. Petersburg moved to Paris in 1910, then the mecca of modern art. During the First World War he returned to Russia, which he left for France in 1922. In 1931 he made a trip to the Holy Land. He was artistically and spiritually inspired to create two series of Bible illustrations: one immediately after his return and one twenty-five years later, which was published in 1956. Chagall died on 28 March 1985 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. In addition to murals, mosaics and tapestries, his legacy includes many paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs that are exhibited in museums around the world.
