The French painter M.F. Girard, better known as M.F. Firmin-Girard, began his career as a painter of historical and biblical scenes. After setting up his studio on the Boulevard de Clichy in Paris in 1861, he mainly painted lively, colourful Parisian street scenes and the mundane life in theaters and cafes. These became extremely popular with contemporaries, as did his flowers and idyllic scenes with farmers and fishermen. Museums: including the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
