biography of Marinus Adamse

The Dordrecht painter Marinus Adamse started his artistic life as a worker in the glass factory of Bouvy in Dordrecht. When he turned out to be talented in drawing, a grant enabled him to study at the academy in Munich. He then spent some time in Rotterdam where he took part in the first exhibition of De Branding in 1917. In his modest, small flower still lifes and portraits, Marinus Adamse opts for simplicity and stylization instead of fierce expressionism. In this his work is sometimes reminiscent of that of Mankes, although he uses an open, blond color. Field bouquets, deep-colored violets glowing from the black and nasturtiums against a white background testify to a pure sense of shape and color.
