In his work, the artist Martin Stam tries to leave everyday reality. He mainly paints human figures in a magical realistic style. Women and children find themselves in an unreal, surrealistic environment in which sometimes incomprehensible events take place. However, the plump and slightly deformed characters are not affected by the remarkable situations. They often stare at the viewer in a mysterious way. Stam studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he was a student of Co Westerik. In addition to being a painter, Stam worked as a drawing teacher at a secondary school from 1964.
