Max van der Wissel was born in 1906 and studied in the 1920s at the Academy Minerva under F.H. Bach and A.W. Short. He then belonged to the second generation of Ploeg painters, who also largely focused on depicting the Groningen landscape. In later life he was associated with Minerva as a teacher and assistant director.
