The originally German artist Maximilian Kitzinger settled in Nijmegen around 1823. Here he lived and worked until 1838. In that year he moved to Amsterdam, where he lived for many years. In 1844 Kitzinger also spent a short time in Antwerp. He mainly painted landscapes, often by moonlight, but there are also some church interiors and genre pieces by him. In the period 1838-1845 Kitzinger exhibited his work at the annual Exhibition of Living Masters, alternately in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen and Rotterdam.
