biography of Moritz Calisch

The Amsterdam painter Moritz Calisch was a student of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and then of the history and portrait painter J.A. Kruseman. Under his leadership, he specialized in painting figures and narrative genre scenes, which are characterized by a great attention to detail. The main subject was the daily life of the Dutch bourgeoisie, in which marital happiness and family joy were glorified and the woman was depicted in an idealized manner. Although Calisch had never been to Italy, he painted his figures more than once in an Italian setting. A number of historical representations of the painter are also known.
