Nicolaas Wijnberg is best known as co-founder of 'De Realisten' (1945), a group of Amsterdam painters who formed the counter-movement to Cobra. Wijnberg's figurative style has undergone major changes over the years. Starting out in an impressionistic style, he came up with an extremely personal expressionism in the 1950s. In the 1960s he developed a more surrealistic style with erotic symbols. This work often had a humorous effect. His work is always distinctly colourful with a drawing-like shape and details. The painter was also active as a designer of costumes, sets and posters for the Dutch theatre. Exhibition: Utrecht, Kunstzaal De Reiger, April-May 1965.
