biography of Otto Jarl

Austrian sculptor Otto Jarl was born in 1856 in Uppsala, Sweden, and attended technical school in Stockholm. He then left for Vienna, where he would continue to live and work for the rest of his life. He studied there from 1880 at the Academy, where he was taught by Edmund von Hellmer a.o., later one of the founders of the progressive Vienna Secession. After his training, Jarl gradually focused more and more on making bronze animal sculptures and developed into one of the most refined animal sculptors. In 1903 and 1904 he designed a number of animal figures for Meissen, as well as for other well-known porcelain factories.
