biography of Paul Riess

Paul Riess initially worked as a decorative painter in Berlin. He also trained as an art teacher. In 1884 he studied at the academy in Weimar, in the years 1888-'89 he stayed in Munich and Dachau. As a free painter, Riess mainly devoted himself to landscape, especially the East German landscape of the Elbe and Mulde. Riess also visited the Netherlands. In the decades around 1900, like many other German painters, he traveled to the Dutch waters in summer to paint the picturesque fisherman's life. It is known, for example, that he was in Volendam in the period August-October 1887 and that he stayed in Katwijk for a while in 1908. In addition to landscapes, Riess also painted village scenes and figures, especially children on the beach.
