biography of Philippine Anne Madeleine Quarles van Ufford

Phillippine Quarles van Ufford was born in the Dutch East Indies and came to Europe in 1874 at the age of 12, where she settled with her parents in Lausanne, Switzerland. She also lived in Suriname for several years. From 1902 she lived in the Netherlands, for a long time in Bloemendaal and for a number of years in The Hague, where she studied art at the academy. She was also taught by the famous flower still life painter Margaretha Roosenboom. Following her teacher, Phillippine Quarles van Ufford painted floral arrangements, but there are also many Dutch and Indies landscapes by her hand. In addition to paintings and drawings, the artist also made sculptures. She was a member of Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam.
