Piet Cottaar lived and worked in Rotterdam almost all his life. He didn't chose the harbour as his subject, but life indoors, especially still lifes and flowers. Although self-taught, Cottaar painted artistically high-quality compositions, finely elaborated, with special colours. He was particularly known for his still lifes of poppies and sunflowers.
