biography of Pieter 'Piet' Meiners

Piet Meiners, son of the Oosterbeek School painter Claas Hendrik Meiners, led a withdrawn life and only received public recognition after his early death. During his education at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie, he taught Willem Witsen and W.B. Tholen, with whom he would remain friends for life. After completing his education, he mainly painted landscapes in the Arnhem area. Meiners also made intimate, sober still lifes and a single portrait, cityscape and genre piece. From 1896 he lived permanently at 'Ewijkshoeve', the estate of the Witsen family, where he looked after the garden and animals. The influence of the 'Tachtigers', who regularly met at the Ewijkshoeve, is hardly visible in his work.
