Pieter Cornelis Dommershuijzen specialised in painting seascapes and riverscapes, harbours, shipwrecks and seaside views, and was particularly inspired by the maritime works of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. He moved to England, probably in 1861, where he painted quintessential Dutch seascapes for the British market. He alternately signed his works with ‘P.C. Dommershuizen’, ‘P.C. Dommelshuizen’ and ‘P.C. Dommersen’.
