biography of Pieter Gerardus Sjamaar

The Hague painter Pieter Gerardus Sjamaar gained fame with his nocturnal markets and interiors in which candlelight is the only light source. The genre of the night scene, also called 'nocturne', corresponded to the fascination of the romantic collector for the mysterious forces of nature and was very popular in the nineteenth century. Painters such as Petrus van Schendel, J.C. Vaarberg, H.G. ten Cate and Theodorus Abels also practiced this genre.
