biography of Pieter Willem Sebes

In his younger years, the Frisian painter Pieter Sebes worked as a painter in Harlingen, where he also painted interior houses with figures in Hindeloopen. Then he left for Antwerp to be trained as a painter at the academy. Afterwards he stayed in his hometown Harlingen and in Leeuwarden. He also lived and worked for a long time in Brussels (1858-'62 and 1866-'81) and Amsterdam (1881-'96). Sebes mainly painted genre scenes and portraits, often with a Frisian character. He also made copies of old paintings on commission. In the period 1853-1901 he submitted work several times for the annual Exhibition of Living Masters.
