biography of Pieter Willem van Baarsel

Pieter Willem van Baarsel had many talents. He was a glass painter, graphic designer, painter and book cover designer. He was educated at Delft University of Technology and the art academy of The Hague. Until 1921 he worked in The Hague, where he had contact with craftsman Karel Sluijterman. He mainly painted landscapes and portraits. Little is known about his painting. This painting of a woman sitting under a parasol on the terrace was a much-loved subject of the Impressionists. In this intimate scene, Van Baarsel used contrasting colors. This emphasizes the effect of the sunlight.
