biography of Raymond de Meester de Betzenbroeck

Raymond de Meester de Betzenbroeck is considered one of the most important Belgian animal sculptors of the 20th century. His oeuvre is characterized by a true-to-life, powerful and at the same time elegant representation of the animal. In the years 1925-'31 he daily visited the Antwerp Zoo for study and inspiration. His keen observation and diligence paid off: he took part in the World Exhibitions in Antwerp (1930) and Brussels (1935), received commissions for monuments and was awarded several times. His work can be found in important museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Paris, Bern, Buenos Aires and Riga.
