Originally a Frisian painter, who lived and worked in Rotterdam for most of his life. He preferred to paint sea and river views with ships, for which he drew inspiration near Rotterdam, along the Frisian coast and around the Zuiderzee. He was also a teacher at the Academy in Rotterdam.
