The German sculptor Renée Sintenis mainly made small animal sculptures, but also sculptures of women and athletes. Already in her youth she drew a lot; her work from that time shows a predilection for horses. Her art training in Berlin (1908-11) started with painting lessons, but Sintenis soon turned to sculpture. In the 1920s she experienced her first major successes. In 1931 she became the first female sculptor to join the Berlin Academy and in the following years she exhibited in New York and Paris. Meanwhile, her work in Germany was declared an 'entartet' by the Nazis, but rehabilitation soon followed after the war. Sintenis designed the Golden Bear that is awarded every year during the Internationale Filmfestspiele in Berlin.
