Little is known about the life and work of Sanne Bruinier. In her early years she lived and worked in Paris and Florence. We know this from letters from her from the years 1900-1902, bundled and published in 1993 under the title 'And all those unpleasantness because you are not a man: letters from a young painter around 1900'. They paint a vivid picture of the world of this young artist. Sanne Bruinier, then about 25 years old, tells in an animated correspondence with her sister Hélène from Florence and Paris about her daily activities and her progress in painting. This drawing, fine in tone and elaboration, shows the influence of Symbolism, a movement that emerged in France from about 1885 and still played an important role on the art scene around the turn of the century.
