Sebastiaan Voorn Boers was born in Rotterdam in 1828 as the son of the then well-known lithographer and publisher S. Ph. Voorn Boers. He learned lithography at a young age in his father's company. He also developed into a versatile painter with a preference for richly detailed still lifes of flowers and fruits, often traditionally arranged on a marble plinth. His work was loved by contemporaries, in particular because of the refined use of the brush and the great fidelity to nature. Landscapes, still lifes and portraits are also part of his oeuvre.
