Sophus Vermehren was a descendant of a well-known Danish painter's family. His father was the famous genre and landscape painter Frederik Vermehren, his brother Gustav was a genre painter, writer and art critic. Both devoted themselves to painting interiors with elegant young women. Sophus also specialized in narrative genre performances with children, often with a humorous undertone. Both brothers had a private drawing and painting school in Copenhagen from 1892, where many young artists received their training. Sophus was also a teacher at the Teknisk Skole in Copenhagen for some time.
