Søren Christian Bjulf was trained as a portrait painter in Paris and Düsseldorf. After that he traveled a lot, in Central Europe and the countries around the Mediterranean. In addition to portraits, Bjulf also painted landscapes and genre pieces in a colourful, impressionist style. However, he specialized in city scenes; he particularly preferred depictions of flower markets or fishermen and fish halls.
