biography of Stefano Novo

The Italian Stefano Novo stood out in painting attractive Venetian beautiful women, daydreaming, selling flowers or looking out over the streets of the city from their balcony. He also painted cityscapes or 'vedute', such as San Marco Square, the Rialto Bridge and the gondolas in the lagoon. Thus his work belongs to the so-called Venetian genre, which was particularly popular in the 19th century due to the rise of tourism in Europe. Novo was born in Cavarzere and visited the Venice Academy as a pupil of the genre painters Pompeo Molmenti and Eugène de Blaas.
