biography of Stephen Reid

The originally Scottish artist Stephan Reid painted historical and mythological representations, landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. In terms of style and subject matter, he still belongs to the Victorian artists who, from 1850 onwards, oriented themselves to Medieval painting as a reaction to industrialization. In realistic style and bright colors they painted genre pieces based on history, mythology and literature. Important for the artistic development of Reid was his acquaintance, around 1899 in London, with the work of the history painter Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911). After 1900 he also illustrated children's and fairy-tale books, including 'The maid marvelous Jeanne D'arc by Magdalene Horsfall (1916).
