The Amsterdam-born artist Theo Mooyman lived in The Hague for most of his life. In the court city he studied at the Royal Academy, where he was taught by, among others, Co Westerik, and the Academy Psychopolis. Afterwards he was an active member of several artists' associations in The Hague, such as Liga Nieuw Beelden, the Haagse Kunstkring and Pulchri Studio. Mooyman mainly painted figure representations and cityscapes; he was also a gifted graphic artist who made etchings and aquatints.
