Theodoor Soeterik was born in Utrecht in 1810, was apprenticed to landscape painter Bruno van Straaten, and lived and worked in the cathedral city all his life. He painted many cityscapes and landscapes, many of them by evening or moonlight. In addition to being a painter, he also worked as a drawing teacher.
