The oeuvre of Tibout Regters consists mainly of portraits and group portraits of families. He specialized in so-called conversation pieces, a new genre in the 18th century in which groups are portrayed informally, for example in a living room. Regters learned the trade from Jan Maurits Quinkhard, who was also passionate about making portraits. From 1732 he worked in Amsterdam, where he could count the well-to-do citizens, often Mennonites, among his clients. Regters became a successful portrait painter and has an oeuvre of more than 100 paintings and dozens of drawings.
