A native of The Hague, Ton Pape was a painter of exceptional originality who alternated between figurative and abstract work. His favourite subjects were the dunes, with their rolling slopes, and urban areas, where he often focused on empty spaces. He also produced geometric abstract compositions. Pape studied at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, and later frequently displayed work at Pulchri Studio, both in member exhibitions and solo shows. In the 1960s Pape gained a reputation as a designer of patterns for carpets and fabrics.
