biography of Antoine Guillaume 'Tony' Minartz

The oeuvre of the French artist Tony Minartz centres around two main themes: Paris nightlife and the towns and countryside of southern France. On the Côte d’Azur he painted everything he encountered along the shore and promenades – yachts and fishing boats in the bustling harbours, beaches and seaside visitors enjoying themselves in Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice and Monaco. Minartz is better remembered, however, as the chronicler of Parisian nightlife in the period from the Belle Époque to the turbulent 1930s. His paintings of parties, casinos, café-chantants, circuses, fairs and theatre and ballet performances capture the excitement of society life in the French capital.
