Van Jones regularly worked as an illustrator for companies for which he created advertising materials. Between 1927 and 1941 he designed posters for companies such as Marks and Spencer, the British Railways and Tramway Company, the Friary Ales Brewery and London Zoo. In his free work he painted and watercoloured in realistic style pastel-coloured landscapes and genre scenes showing sporting events. He also regularly portrayed young women in fashionable outfits.
