biography of Willem Jan van Dam

Willem Jan van Dam can best be described as a moderate expressionist, although his work has never been included in this school. As an autodidact, he approached his subjects purely emotionally. His canvases are therefore broadly designed, yet sensitively painted with a delicate, pure use of colour that fits in with the sober, almost geometrically elementary of his forms. Van Dam made many cityscapes in Amersfoort, but also painted subjects outside, such as in the vicinity of Soest, where he found old, dreamy farms, and in Limburg, Drenthe and Switzerland.
