biography of Wilhelmus 'Willem' Schrofer

Willem Schrofer started out as an impressionist painter and draftsman of portraits, figures, still lifes and landscapes. But his idiosyncratic vision of art and volatile character are reflected in a dualism between realism and abstraction. He became known for his abstract works that he made between 1926 and 1946. But Schrofer was more than just an artist. His studio was a meeting place for artists, designers and writers. As co-founder of the Hague Artists' Group 'Verve', he also gave an important impulse to the art circuit in The Hague. Schrofer studied in The Hague at the Drawing Institute Bik en Vaandrager and the Academy of Visual Arts. From 1937 to 1963 he taught at the Institute of Applied Arts in Amsterdam and the Academy in The Hague. In this position he was important to many young artists.
