Willem van der Ven worked as a technical draftsman and designer of ship components before choosing to paint in 1935. Nature and the Dutch landscape were his favorite subjects. His technical approach is revealed in the elaboration: no experiments or a loose, expressionistic painting style, but a balanced structure, with sharp transitions of light and dark and a certain stylization of the forms. Its color is also subdued and limits itself to colors such as dark and light green, white, gray and black. All this makes the paintings intimate and at the same time spacious in atmosphere.
