Willy van Schoonhoven van Beurden was a painter of light, luministic landscapes, flowers, figures and cityscapes. After his drawing course in Amsterdam he took painting lessons with the Impressionist Rob Graafland. Luminism was probably brought to him by Jan Toorop, from whom he also received painting lessons during these first years in Amsterdam. From 1908 to 1925 the painter lived and worked in Laren. There he painted landscapes, farms and farm figures. In 1925 he returned to the capital, where he taught at the Amsterdams Lyceum alongside free painting.
