Aat Verhoog is active as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and architect. He studied at the art academy in The Hague and his work was subsequently regularly shown in exhibitions, including in 1961 at the Paris Biennale, in 1965 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and in 1993 at the Princessehof Keramiekmuseum in Leeuwarden. Human figures are central to his work, with the relationship between the characters sometimes remaining mysterious. He also subtly refers to historical subjects, such as mythology. Despite the fact that his own life often serves as the inspiration for his paintings, he never takes the events literally. He says about this: 'a painting of mine is always based on an idea. That is to say, it has always been invented, constructed, brought together.' Verhoog mainly paints in a clear colour palette in a style that fits within realism.
