Abraham Hulk, painter and adventurer, was born into a family mainly comprising marine artists. He began making portraits, and to do this left his home town of London in 1833, travelling by schooner to Boston and from there to New York, Albany and Manchester. He then lived in the Netherlands until 1870 where he concentrated on painting seascapes, both in calm weather as well as in a stiff breeze. Hulk married Maria Wilhelmina van der Meulen in Amsterdam on November 2, 1837 and together they had 5 children. In 1870 he moved permanently to London, where he moved into a house on Mornington Road, St Pancras. Hulk participated in the Society of British Artists' exhibitions and was a successful marine painter. He died in Zevenaar in 1897 during a visit to the Netherlands. His style is romantic and akin to that of J.C. Schotel and Louis Meijer. Hulk was concerned with displaying an idealized atmospheric image of ships at sea, in different weather conditions.
