The French painter Dunoyer de Segonzac was born on 7 July 1884 in Boussy-Saint-Antoine. Although his parents initially wanted to send him to a military academy, he was given the opportunity to develop his drawing talent with Luc-Olivier Merson and later at the Académie de la Palette in Paris. He then took independent courses to launch his artistic career in 1906. Dunoyer de Segonzac exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants and became a member of Section d'Or. For his military services in the First World War, he earned a Croix de Guerre. He etched a lot and drew inspiration from his military experiences. The spontaneous and fine etchings contrast with the thickly painted surfaces and predominantly sombre colours of his oil paintings, in which the admiration for Courbet and Cézanne can be seen. Dunoyer de Segonzac mainly produced landscapes, still lifes and nudes. He died at the age of 90 in Paris in 1974.
